Pasadena Modern Resources Historic Context Statement

Pasadena Modern Resources Historic Context Statement

The City of Pasadena is renowned for its outstanding collection of resources associated with the Arts & Crafts movement and is justly celebrated for its long-standing commitment to historic preservation. Pasadena has also played an important role in the development of Modernist architecture in the mid-20th century, but until recently the City’s preservation efforts had largely been concentrated on resources from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Historic Resources Group (along with Pasadena Heritage) prepared a historic context statement for the City of Pasadena for cultural resources of the recent past. The project was funded by a grant through the Certified Local Government (CLG) program. The context statement was the first comprehensive look at Pasadena’s modern resources, and included a historic narrative, specific registration requirements for evaluating properties from the modern era, and a comprehensive list of architects and builders from the period. The historic context statement now provides guidance for planners and the general public in assessing the historic significance and integrity of Pasadena’s built environment from the recent past.
